This course has been designed to prepare you for studying and working with people from different cultures. Specifically, the course will help you:
It’s a hybrid course. That means it works in two modes: online and face-to-face (physical or virtual). There are five UNITS each containing two sub-units on a specific topic. UNITS are accessible via the online platform and provide you with Videos, Research Time and Tasks. The Videos are animated, funny conversations between two or three of the seven characters specially created for this course.
The Videos provide essential input on a particular topic. Research Time gives guidance and links to authentic supplementary materials, so you can dive deeper into a particular topic. Once you’ve done the receptive learning of watching Videos and accessing Research Time links, you can move on to productive learning by responding to Tasks.
Within each UNIT you will find a range of Tasks that help you think about and consolidate your learning by writing or making a video in response to a question or prompt. Su, your superhero guide, is one of the seven characters from the animated Videos. She will help you navigate your way through the course.
The online platform has spaces where you can reflect on, monitor, store, and share your work. In MYSPACE you can set your profile, access information on your progress, log reflections on your learning experiences, and store your responses to Tasks.
PARTIES make up the face-to-face part of the course. Having registered for the course you will be invited to attend a Welcome PARTY where you get to meet and make friends with your fellow classmates.
At this PARTY you will also be introduced to the online platform. After the PARTY, you can take your time going through two UNITS, storing work and monitoring progress on your MYSPACE, as well as re-connecting with your classmates in SHARESPACE.
After you’ve had time to work on two UNITS, you’ll be invited to another PARTY. This will allow you to meet again face-to-face. Meeting face-to-face helps you develop and expand your social interactions and deepen your learning in a fun environment.
You get to join a range of activities and play a team-based pub quiz (questions are based on input in the UNITS). There are four PARTIES during the course, so you have lots of chances to meet old friends, make new friends, and win the pub quiz with your teammates!
In SHARESPACE you can share your profile, reflections and work from your Tasks. Sharing enables you to deepen your learning by seeing what others have done, and by giving and receiving feedback. Sharing also allows you to be in constant contact with your classmates so you don’t feel alone.
